vs Shepparton Gators

It was a tough start to the Big V Division 1 Mens season for the Luina Geelong Supercats against a formidable opponent in the Shepparton Gators.

Justin Patton inside and Bailey Michel from outside the arc were causing many headaches for the Supercats defence.

Steve Wiasak did what he does best and got a couple of important baskets under the basket with his strength, keeping Geelong in the hunt in the first half with 10 points to half time.

A costly foul and technical foul to Patton saw him with 4 beside his name just before the half time break as the home side steadied through Dane Bow and Wiasak to be within 7 points at the half.

More bad news for the Gators with their other import Jaleel Williams also committing the same sin immediately after half time to also have 4 to his name.

With both of the opposition imports sitting on the pine, the Supercats had their opportunity to pounce but the young Gators line up continued to press the home side hard.

J P Wilkinson benefited to get to the basket on several occasions in the third term and even when Patton returned late in the term Wilkinson was able to utilise the foul count in his favour to be a strong target in the paint.

Only 6 points separated the two teams at the final change and with some great defence and successive 3 pointers from the evergreen Paul Hutchison and Jackson Bentley the home side held the lead.

With the Gators refusing to lie down and getting the game back to a solitary point, the Supercats through Wiasak, Bentley and Lewie Varley were able to hold on and make it 4 from 4 for our senior teams in Round 1, winning 83 to 79.
