GBL WRAP – Round 19

The final round of the 2017 GBL Championship season kicked off with Deakin securing a last second win thanks to a Jeremy Diamond game winning tip in, final scores 67-65. Diamond led the way for Deakin, scoring a game high 23 points. Well supported by 19 points from Jesse Burn and 18 from Kirk Harris. Taylor Dow was best for Try Boys with 20 points, while Seb Thomason had 13 of his own.

In a possible finals matchup, YMCA were able to knock off ladder leaders Pivot City 71-66 on the eve of the finals. 21 points from Lewis Varley capped of his impressive season. Jack Terrill (15 points) and Emerson Varley (13) both were pivotal in the win. Pivot were led by Chris Eichler, who had 22 points to lead all scorers, while Kyle Meyer also chipped in 15 points in the loss.

CC Eagles will roar into the finals chock full of confidence, following a crushing defeat of Dolphins 104-52. Liam McInerney led from the front as he has all season, scoring 26 points. Robbie Kennedy put in a valuable 17 points in support. Kael Singline had a season high 20 points in the loss, although not enough to keep Dolphins competitive.

A big 4th quarter has seen an undermanned Lara outfit run over the top of Sharks, winning 89-77. Jackson Bentley added another 30-point game to his league leading tally, while Joel McFall had 27 points of his own in the win. Seamus Hants had 18 points to lead Sharks, while JP Wilkinson and Dane Bow both had 17 points apiece.

Vytis finished their season on a positive note, crushing an undermanned Tigers 88-43 in a lopsided affair. Michael Rebula led an even spread of scoring for Vytis with 21 points. Christian Keepen also added 19 points in the win. Griffin Errey was the only Tiger to reach double figures, scoring 19 points as his team went down.

In the final Men’s game of the night, Rovers were able to edge out Surfcoast to claim a 61-58 win. Jack Dunstan led the way for Rovers, scoring 20 points. James Zielinski also put in a nice game, scoring 17 points of his own. Ben Barrett did the bulk of the scoring for Surfcoast, putting in 26 points in the losing effort.

In the Women’s competition, Pivot City showed they are ready for the finals as they destroyed Try Boys 113-36. Eve Braslis was sensational, scoring 39 points. Teagan Tatlock (32 points) and Agnes Emma-Nnopu (26) both got in on the action also. Olivia Virt did all she could to keep Try Boys competitive, scoring 18 points but was the only player on her team to crack double digits.

Sharks have caused a mini upset on the eve of the finals, comfortably defeating ladder leading Dolphins 74-54. Georgia Varley led the way in dominating fashion, with 35 points to lead all scorers. Alex Duck (20 points) and Katrina Vogelezang (14) provided the support. Ebony Rolph worked hard in defeat, scoring 21 points, while Kim Martin chipped in 14 points of her own.

In the final game of the evening, Rovers ensured that YMCA remained winless, running out 66-49 winners. Lauren Bellegante led all scorers with 28 points to continue her fine season. Georgia Tauschke also chipped in a valuable 19 points in the win. Holly Robinson battled hard for YMCA, scoring 17 points to lead the way in defeat.
