Geelong Supercats Senior Selection Policy and Pathway

Geelong Supercats Senior Selection Policy and Pathway

Policy date: 12/08/2018

Adopted by Basketball Geelong Commission: 12/08/18

Scheduled review date: 12/08/2020

With the coming Representative Tryouts approaching, Basketball Geelong has updated its Senior Selection Policy. This has been done in response to the work undertaken by the BG board and the other regional associations in the formation of Barwon Basketball that was to see a unified regional approach. Unfortunately this has progressed in a manner that has precluded BG from further involvement. We remain open to the potential for other associations to partake in our program and hope this will occur in the near future. The new policy offers an amnesty period for the coming Representative season with full implementation in the following years.

The Geelong Supercats VJBL Junior Program is the recognised pathway to our Big V and South Eastern Australian Basketball (SEABL) Supercats teams.  Basketball Geelong are the only program in the Barwon Region that offers a pathway to a national level competition.

From the 2018/19 season, Basketball Geelong will be applying a policy for senior selection in Geelong Supercats teams, whereby players wishing to be considered for selection in senior teams (SEABL, Big V, CBL) must have played or be playing in the Geelong Supercats VJBL competition.

The policy, as outlined below, details waiting periods for players who have not played a minimum of two years within the Geelong Supercats VJBL program. For selection of 2019 senior teams only, these waiting periods will be waived, provided that the player wishing to be considered for selection in a senior team has played at least one year of VJBL with Geelong Supercats and/or is a registered player in a Geelong Supercats VJBL team for the 2018/19 season. From 2020, the policy outlined below and minimum waiting periods will be strictly adhered to.

This gives junior players who are currently outside the Geelong Supercats program (particularly in Under 16 and Under 18 age groups) the opportunity to join the Supercats VJBL program in 2018/19 and try out for senior selection in 2019, including Youth League and Development spots, with no penalty.

SENIOR SELECTION POLICY DETAILS

To play for the Supercats at senior level players will need to adhere to the following selection policies;

  1. Junior players that play VJBL for another association;
  2. If the player has never played for the Geelong Supercats VJBL program, that player will be required to sit out a two-year waiting period from the final year of VJBL with another association;
  3. If the player moves across to Geelong Supercats during the Under 18 level, that player will be required to sit out a one year waiting period;
    • If the player moves across to Geelong before the Under 18 level, that player will be eligible to play for the Geelong Supercats at a senior level if/when selected.
  1. If you are a player from outside the Geelong region your selection will need to fit within the coach’s selection policy;
  2. SEABL teams are selected at the coach and CEO’s discretion using the policy below;
  3. Players from outside the Geelong region are only eligible for primary rosters spots in our BigV Division One teams (i.e., not eligible for development spots);
    • Players from outside the Geelong region are ineligible for selection in our Youth League teams, unless special exemption is granted.

TEAM STRUCTURES

SEABL

Subject to the coach’s discretion, the primary SEABL rosters will have 12 players selected. This will consist of;

3 MARQUEE OR RESTRICTED PLAYERS

Clubs can have a maximum of three players who are restricted but no more than two players born outside the Asia/Oceania region.

For NBL/WNBL players to become unrestricted the principles are;

  • Players who have played 60 games or more consecutively over 3+ seasons at that club.
  • Players who have played more than 125 SEABL games accumulatively at that club.

These 3 players are not counted in the coach’s minimum local talent calculations, detailed below.

10 ADDITIONAL ROSTERED PLAYERS

These are players that are either selected directly by the coaching staff or selected from the Supercats Senior Try-Outs. All efforts must be made by the coaching staff to ensure a minimum of 70% local talent within this group.

All local players should play within the Geelong Basketball League (GBL) competition, unless they qualify for an exemption through the Basketball Geelong exemption policy and adhere to the VJBL minimum years played or waiting period selection policy.

4-8 NOMINATED REPLACEMENT PLAYERS

At the coach’s discretion, they may nominate 4-8 players from the Big V teams that will be listed with Big V as potential replacement players during the season, if the SEABL team suffers an injury or illness.

These players would have regular commitments with the SEABL teams to ensure they are capable of filling a position on the roster if the opportunity presents throughout the season.

DEVELOPMENT PLAYERS

At the coach’s discretion, they may nominate players to participate in the SEABL program as development players. These players must still be participating, or have completed their junior representative career within the Geelong Supercats VJBL program. Players from outside of the Geelong Supercats VJBL program are ineligible for selection as a development player

LOCAL TALENT RULE

A player is deemed to be a local player for SEABL calculations purposes if;

  1. They have played junior basketball for Basketball Geelong, even if they have left Geelong for a period of time to pursue or continue their career elsewhere. E.g. A player that has attended the CoE or College in the USA.
  2. A player that has been recruited by Basketball Geelong for the purpose of filling a position on the roster outside of the Local Talent Quota, that has played for the Supercats for 3 years or greater, and has played within the Geelong Basketball League enough games to qualify for finals in each of the 3 Championship Seasons.
  3. Coaches may specifically request permission to include a player in their local talent quota if the player has moved to Geelong from outside the region for personal reasons and is therefore intending to be a Geelong resident even in the off-season.

BIG V DIVISION ONE

The BigV Division One team is to be a representative team of the GBL and therefore all players must play within the GBL, unless they qualify for an exemption through the Basketball Geelong Exemption Policy.  Subject to the coach’s discretion, the primary Big V Division One roster will have 12 players selected. This will consist of;

10 PRIMARY ROSTERED PLAYERS

These players are considered to be the best 10 players for the team from the Supercats Senior Try-Outs. All of these players must be registered and play within the GBL and adhere to the VJBL minimum years played or waiting period selection policy.

2 PRIMARY ROSTER DEVELOPMENT PLAYERS:

These players must still be participating or have completed their junior representative career within the Geelong Supercats VJBL program. Players from outside of the Geelong VJBL program are ineligible for selection as a development player.

BIG V YOUTH LEAGUE

The Big V Youth League is considered the pathway for local players from Junior representative teams to senior representative basketball. Therefore, players selected in this team must be registered and play within the GBL, without exception and still be participating, or have completed their junior representative career within the Geelong Supercats VJBL program. Players from outside of the Geelong Supercats VJBL program are ineligible for selection in this team, unless permission is granted by Basketball Geelong on the coach’s request for special consideration. E.g. A player has recently moved to Geelong from outside the region for personal reasons.

All final decisions or exemptions are at the discretion of the Basketball Geelong Commission.
