GEELONG SUPERCATS SPONSORSHIP

Basketball Geelong is pleased to confirm it was today announced as one of 18 Foundation Licence Holders for the new Senior Elite Men’s and Women’s League set to commence in 2019. The League that will be managed by Basketball Victoria includes all of the former Victorian SEABL clubs, plus Eltham, Knox, Waverley and Ringwood from the 2018 BigV Championship. Basketball Victoria have also accepted licence applications from Albury, the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence and Tasmania’s trio of Hobart, North West Tassie (Men) and Launceston (Women).

Upon receiving confirmation of the licence Basketball Geelong’s CEO Dean Anglin said “we are excited to be part of this new league. After celebrating our 40th year this year it would have been disappointing not to participate in our 41st and following the decision to remove the SEABL we were concerned with where our future was”

The establishment of the league was fast tracked by Basketball Victoria after a shock announcement from Basketball Australia on SEABL Grand Final Day that is would no longer support the league. While Basketball Australia had budgeted for the league to run in 2019, the clubs were left with little doubt that 2019 would be the final year and encouraged Basketball Victoria to create a viable, high quality alternative immediately.

“We are excited to continue to play against our country rivals” Mr Anglin said. “we also love that our fans can drive to almost every game during the season, with just a Tasmania trip each year if we are scheduled to venture that way”. The unfortunate casualty from this change has been the Mt Gambier Pioneers. The South Australian club has not secured a licence to the new league, Basketball Geelong suspects this is due largely to not meeting the established men’s and women’s team criteria as the Pioneers have only been a men’s club in SEABL.

Our teams will begin their 2019 preparations with Senior Try Outs on the following days.
Men’s: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 11th 2pm – 4pm & SUNDAY NOVEMBER 18th 5pm – 7pm @ AWA ALLIANCE BANK STADIUM
