Former Iowa State University and All American, Chelsea Poppens will join the Luina Geelong Lady Supercats for season 2018.  At 6’2″ Poppens will add an important dimension to the Lady Supercats with injured players Sara Blicavs and Alex Bunton sidelined.   Her addition is a crucial signing as the team attempts to go back to back in the SEABL competition in 2018.

Poppens is one of two players to achieve more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds for Iowa State throughout 2009 and 2013.  She was named on the Naismith Player of the year watch list and was selected to the Big 12 1st team on two occasions.  Averaging 13.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in her senior year Poppens was known as one of the hardest working players in college basketball which include 32 career double – doubles.

Straight out of college, Poppens was selected 18th in the WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm, but she was waived. She then went to the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2013.  Since her time in the WNBA Poppens has had a distinguished professional career averaging close to a double – double in every team she has played.  In 2016 while playing in Sweden she was voted the league MVP averaging 20.7 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.

“To replace both Sara Blicavs and Alex Bunton in one go is almost impossible, we have searched high and low for the best available player and we believe we have found this in Chelsea Poppens.’  ‘Every person I have spoken to has mentioned how hard she works and the fact she is familiar with the Australian style of play having played with the Bulleen (Melbourne) Boomers in 2014, is an added bonus.’ Coach David Herbert said

‘To average 14.4 points and 8 rebounds a game in the WNBL provides a great reference for our club when we considered Chelsea.  We are excited that she will join us in 2018 and confident she will add leadership and a never say die approach to our program.’ ‘Poppens will be a player to watch in the SEABL this year.” Herbert added.

Player BIO
I grew up on a farm in smalltown, Iowa and went to Iowa State University to play D1 basketball for the Cyclones. Then I got drafted 2nd Round to the WNBA for Seattle Storm and then went on to play for the San Antonio Stars. In the past, I’ve played for the Melbourne Boomers, as well as teams in Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, Puerto Rico, and Lebanon. I expect to help the team make it to the Championship round this year by working hard to dominate down low and crash the boards each game.
How do you expect the team to go in 2018 and why?
I expect the team to make it to the championship this year because only thing stopping us is ourselves.
What are you most looking forward to in 2018?
I am looking forward to playing with the Supercats and seeing all my old Aussie friends again back in Melbourne. Also, I can’t wait to graduate from my MBA program finally in December.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
I would probably be a red crayon. Mostly because I’m a ginger.
If you won $10 million in lotto, what would you do?
I would invest in a few different stocks, donate some to a few charities of choice, pay off my school loans for my masters, spoil my family members, and invest in creating a few businesses of my own.
What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
Anything and everything.
What’s your favourite ’90s jam?
Baby Got Back- Sir Mix Alot
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
I would be a fox because I think they are pretty neat.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be the kind of person who never stops asking herself that. I want to reach one version of myself at a time and always strive to become a better version of it. Whether that be a mother, daughter, wife, business woman, professional athlete, christian, or friend.
What inspires you?
Other people and their stories of overcoming trials to reach the successes in their life.
Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman and why?
Spiderman by a landslide. He’s got superhuman powers, whereas Batman is just a rich human with no powers.
A penguin walks onto centre court wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he there?
Free margueritas served in the lounge after the win tonight.
